The Mission

Quantelix is on a mission to disrupt the $34B biosensing market using quantum technology.  We’re still in stealth mode, but we’ve raised a significant seed round from savvy investors,  and we’re building out our team and our product.  We’re looking for someone with the right combination of technical skills and an entrepreneurial spirit to be our first Photonics Engineer. If you have the experience and skills described below, and you want to help change a massive market, then reach out to us.

Required Skills and Experience:

PhD related to quantum optics and photonics or a related B.S. and  3 years’ experience in industry working on quantum optics and photonics.  Must have experience in on-chip photonics, thin film lithium niobate, periodic poling, and related optical characterization knowledge.

Responsibilities

You will translate system-level optical requirements into manufacturable ppTFLN devices. The role spans photonic design, nonlinear-device modeling, mask layout, cleanroom fabrication, periodic poling, optical characterization, and process optimization. You will get to:

  • Own the core photonic device platform of an early-stage company and help transition it from laboratory demonstrations to repeatable, scalable hardware.

  • Build early prototypes and drive the transition from single, hand-built demonstrations to repeatable, manufacturable hardware.

  • Work directly with our Co-founder & Chief Scientific Advisor, Prof. Scott Cushing to take our optical/quantum measurement approach and translate it into practical instrumentation choices.

Ideal Background

  • Experience with integrated photonics or advanced optical systems.

  • A track record of cutting edge PIC development, not just fabrication but also development vision.

  • TFLN experience, including periodic poling, waveguides,  and nonlinear devices

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with quantum or entanglement-based measurement techniques.

  • Performed hands-on cleanroom fabrication, including lithography, etching, metallization, electrode fabrication, and related process steps.

  • Visible, ultraviolet, or near-infrared integrated photonics.

  • Fiber-to-chip coupling and photonic packaging.

Compensation & Equity

  • Competitive cash compensation plus meaningful founding-team equity.

  • Specific cash and equity package to be discussed with finalists based on experience and scope.

Location & Work Arrangement

  • Based in / willing to relocate to Los Angeles.

  • Regular in-person time in Pasadena for cofounder working sessions, Cushing-lab visits, and partner/customer engagements.

Applications are reviewed by the Chief of Staff and forwarded to the cofounders. Shortlisted candidates selected for interview will be asked to sign a mutual NDA, after which they will receive Quantelix’s confidential seed memorandum and supporting materials.
